Here’s what the activity is about.
Chino Base is currently working on four projects.
Gallery Lumen Field is a flat, about 53m² space located on the first floor in the center of the building. This white space, which keeps the old folk house’s big beams, can be used for art and craft shows, and as a place for artists to work on projects during residencies. It can also be used for different events, such as photo exhibitions about village festivals, yoga schools, and tasting events.
CHINO BASE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE(CHINO BASE AIR) invites artists from Japan and around the world to stay, create, and share their work in the peaceful mountains of Chino, Shiga. Located on the second floor of Gallery Lumen Field, our space opens onto a landscape of lush nature and connects seamlessly with the studios of local craftspeople. Through short-term residencies and flexible creative programs, artists can slow down, explore new materials, and find inspiration in the quiet beauty of rural Japan. Each residency is shaped together with the artist — making every stay a deeply personal and transformative experience.
Sora-no-Sha Labo is a pottery studio run by a ceramic artist with nearly 30 years of experience, including work in Shigaraki. We offer careful, tailored support for all skill levels—from complete beginners to those with some experience—quietly and deeply conveying the appeal of pottery. It also serves as a research institute for “conversing with clay,” through experimentation with glazes and the exploration of diverse, unique designs.
SATO.NO.MI Woodworking specializes in woodcraft that celebrates the shapes carved out by electric scroll saws. While precise scroll saw work demands solid skill and experience, we strive to make wooden items part of everyday life. We also host fun workshops enjoyed by everyone from children to adults.
